AppearanceCPU PerformanceUser Experience

Right from first glance, the M17 R4 laptop has an elegant and alien design. Alienware redesigned their flagship gaming PCs into a stylish modern look.

The R4 borrows heavily from the R3 laptop and has soft-touch synthetic exteriors and a strong frame. The computer has anodized aluminum, copper, platinum, and magnesium construction that add to its durability. The white PC takes a minimalist construction, weighs 6.5 pounds, and measures 15.7 by 11.6 by 0.87 inches.

Alienware M17 R4 is one of the world’s most powerful gaming-grade laptops.

Offering 16 to 32 RAM of DDR4-2933 RAM and a terabyte of primary space,  this machine is a silo for all your files, games, and programs.

The powerful Core i9-10980HK and 8-core/16-thread processor comes with a 2.4GHz base clock and a 5.3GHz max turbo frequency.  Most of these features are soldered onto the motherboard to make the unit compact and durable-the 6-cells 86WHr CR-2032 battery powers the performing machine for up to six hours.

M17 R4 offers a familiar yet alien experience, and that’s all the Alienware laptops are about.

While the design is almost identical to the R3, R4 has 144Hz and 360Hz panels that display 4K resolution onto a 17-inch screen. The fast blazing 360Hz panel fits well for high-speed multiplayer gamers.

Pros
  • Plenty of external device connection ports
  • The GeForce RTX 3080 and Corei9 offer top-notch performance
  • Plenty of configuration display options
  • It has an aspirational and intuitive Cherry MX mechanical keyboard with customizable lights.
Cons
  • Pricey
  • Low battery life

Verdict: Alienware M17 R4 ranks among the fastest high-end 17-inch laptops for gamers, not unlike the Alienware 17 R5 . Few people would invest in such powerful machines to edit word documents- it’s obscene underuse of its powerful features. The high-quality construction, unique mechanical keyboard, and stellar performance make it worth its premium price.

2. Best High End 17” Laptop: Dell XPS 17 9700

ProcessorIntel i9-10885H 10th Gen
RAM32GB DDR4 RAM
GraphicsNVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 6GB GDDR6
Storage1TB SSD
Display17″
Operating SystemWindows 10 Home
Battery Life8-9 Hours
Weight5.53 pounds

The Dell XPS 17 is back in style. Although it’s pretty supple for its size, it comes with a desktop computer power in a frame comparable to several 15-inch notebooks. It received a CES 2018 Best Innovation Award honoree for the most sustainably produced laptop.

Top 3 Features

AppearancePerformanceUser Experience

Build quality remains excellent, and the display’s tiny bezels mean the laptop is just 248mm wide. That’s impressive for a 17.3in – the Dell is barely more expansive than the Apple MacBook Pro 16 and narrower than the Gigabyte Aero 15. When desktop space is hard to find, that’s welcome.

Everything that distinguishes the XPS series is retained on Dell’s largest laptop, including the appealing silver aluminum exterior, comfy soft-touch deck, and nearly bezel-less InfinityEdge display.

The XPS 17 feels heavy but is impressively light for a laptop its size, measuring 14.74 x 9.76 x 0.77 inches and weighing 4.65 to 5.53 pounds.

The XPS 17 performs well in every task you throw at it without missing a bit, thanks to a 10th Gen Intel Core i7-10875H processor, 32GB of RAM, and a 1TB NVMe SSD memory.

You can regularly work in split-screen mode with more than a dozen Chrome tabs open while bouncing between other programs like Whatsapp, and there was no slowdown as I heaped on the tasks.

The XPS 17 scored an impressive 7,740 on the Geekbench 5 general performance test, outperforming the 16-inch MacBook Pro’s 7,250. (Intel Core i9 CPU, 32GB RAM). Dell’s machine took a relatively quick 8 minutes and 41 seconds to downconvert a 4K video to 1080p, trailing only the MacBook Pro’s 8 minutes on our Handbrake experiment.

The XPS has more processing power than the PC Mac 10 and can handle a broader range of computing tasks. It can easily manage photo editing and content creation and many browser tabs and office tools.

The screen has tiny pixels that highlight the 17.3in the touch panel, and this display uses a 16:10 aspect ratio that compares well to the 16:9 ratios commonly used elsewhere. It has a revised resolution of 3840 x 2400 providing extra vertical space for design output.

The XPS 17 lasted eleven and a half hours in our battery life test, which looped an HD video at 120 nits brightness, which is respectable – two hours longer than the MacBook.

To that end, the XPS 17 scored an impressive 848.6 on the Pugetbench Photoshop test. That’s significantly better than the 786.5 we got from XPS 15, which has a less powerful GPU. The MacBook Pro is a little more limited regarding game suitability, with its Radeon 5500 M GPU delivering a lower 27.2 fps.

Pros
  • Stunning, immersive display
  • Impressive CPU and graphics power
  • Comfortable keyboard
  • Attractive, slim designs
Cons
  • It is expensive
  • The webcam could be better quality

Verdict: The Dell XPS 17 is our Editor’s Choice for the best high-end 17-inch laptop. It’s sleek, and it has a great display, a long battery life, and enough power to manage most everyday tasks. It is, however, expensive, and the high price does not compare to the good features of this laptop. But, it rightfully earned our editor’s choice recommendation for its advanced features!

3. Best battery life: LG gram 17

ProcessorIntel Core i7 Processor 10th Gen- i7-1065G7
RAM16 GB DDR4 RAM
Graphics‎Intel Iris Plus Graphics
Storage‎1TB Flash Memory SSD
Display17 inches
Operating SystemWindows 10 Home
Battery LifeUp to 19.5 Hours
Weight2.98 Pounds

You’ve probably heard a lot about what it’s like to use, hold, and type on an LG Gram previously, but that didn’t take away from the first impression we got when we used the new Gram 17 for the first time, especially this bigger model. The Gram 17 has a lofty 17-inch display but weighs only three pounds and has a battery life that lasts longer than a full day of work. What else does this laptop have to offer?

Top 3 Features

AppearanceCPU PerformanceUser Experience

The Gram 17 does not appear to be particularly large from the outside, with a 99% black color expression. Its thin-font Gram logo is engraved in silver on the display lid, while the rest of the cover is a continuous expanse of black magnesium alloy.

It looks much better than the previous Gram 17 model’s gray exterior, which featured curved edges-possibly an attempt at retro styling, but mostly just stodgy-looking. Even better, it is still under three pounds (2.98 pounds, to be precise).

In the performance test, the LG was roughly three times slower than the Apple, Asus, and XPS 17 because it does not have enough space to cool much more competent CPUs. The review model includes the previously stated Intel Core i7-1065G7 processor, and Intel Iris Xe integrated graphics, the 16GB RAM, and an impressively large 1TB SSD.

These last two also contribute significantly to the laptop’s speed. The laptop proved its worth by completing tasks quickly, even when multiple tabs and programs were open simultaneously. Google Chrome has a reputation for being a resource gobbler, but it will not pose a problem for the LG Gram’s high-end components. If you’re not a gamer or a multimedia content creator, this is without a doubt the best 17-inch laptop you can buy. That was anticipated, given those devices.

The case for purchasing a laptop with a jumbo screen (larger than 15 inches) has never been stronger.

The much-improved LG Gram 17, with a stunning 17-inch QHD display, is the first exhibit. If you need a device that can last a full day of work without needing to be charged, whether you use video calls or not, this is one to consider as it has a battery strength of 80Wh.

With its 2560 x 1600 resolution, you will be able to see images more clearly than on other laptops. It comes with Intel Xe Graphics that provides good results for high-resolution graphic design and editing.

Pros
  • Exceptionally light for a 17-inch laptop
  • Elegant style
  • A backlit keyboard with a larger touchpad is provided
  • Stunning QHD display
Cons
  • Slow to charge
  • Speakers could be higher quality
  • Wifi can be troublesome to reconnect

Verdict: The LG Gram 17 is a productivity powerhouse, with an impressively strong screen, long battery life, and excellent performance. LG’s “Tiger Lake” update means it is among the best large laptops you can purchase.

Storage512GB PCIe SSD
Display17.3 inches

Asus RTX is an entry-level GPU. The TUF series was updated last year with the TUF A17, and the new model now includes an Intel Core i9 and an RTX 3060 instead of an AMD CPU and a GTX 1660 Ti. Is Asus’ arrival into the current RTX generation worthwhile?

AppearanceCPU PerformanceUser Experience

This laptop’s design is nearly identical to that of the ASUS TUF A17 (FA706). The black gaming laptop has similar cuts and lines as well as the same shape as the latter. It also comes in two finishes: one with an aluminum lid and one with a plastic cover.

In terms of measurements, the laptop falls somewhere in the middle of the pack for budget 17-inch gaming laptops. We’re talking about a thickness of 23.9-25.2mm and a weight of 2.60 kilos. Fortunately, the notebook has good structural integrity, which is aided by the honeycomb shape of the frame on the inside.

Because gaming is already a part of the F17’s name, the laptop must excel in this area.

These ambitions are demonstrated by an Intel Core i9-11900H processor, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU, and 16 GB of RAM, although 17-inch laptops frequently feature even higher-performance hardware. Similarly, this CPU is the best configuration, with Core i7 and Core i5 models also available as options.

The ASUS TUF Gaming F17 features a Full HD 144Hz IPS panel with a diagonal of 17.3″ (43.94 cm) and a 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution. The screen ratio is 16:9, with a pixel density of – 127 PPI and a pitch of 0.2 0.2 mm.

There are also two graphics card options: the GTX 1650 and the GTX 1650 Ti. By the way, as you can see in our comparison, they have a lot of power in common. You will enjoy all of the latest AAA titles with stunning visuals.

Despite this, these GPUs appear to be a good middle-of-the-road option at this price point. The F17 only scores more minor points on battery power than the previous, indicating that its CPU performance is mediocre.

Pros
  • Great display on the 144Hz screen
  • Crazy fast to boot
  • Plenty of ports & upgrade slots
  • Excellent speakers
  • Efficient cooling system (heatpipe to heatsink fin cooling)
Cons
  • Battery drains quickly
  • We have heard some complaints about speaker volume issues

Verdict: Yes, this device performs admirably for its intended function. It offers AAA gaming on a shoestring budget. Although it cannot handle the most recent titles at their highest visual settings, most users will be satisfied with the performance it provides. However, the monitor’s remaining rates are still impressive, so the positives outnumber the negatives by a wide margin, resulting in a good gaming laptop with the F17.

7. Best 17 Inch Laptop Under 1000: ASUS VivoBook S17

RAM8GB DDR4
Graphics‎Intel UHD Graphics
Storage256GB PCIe NVMe SSD
Display17.3 Inches
Operating SystemWindows 10 Home
Battery Life7-8 hours
Weight5.10 Pounds

The VivoBook S17 is a budget laptop computer from Taiwanese company ASUSTeK. Known for their affordable desktops, smartphones, and laptops, ASUS offers active support for their devices. The ASUS VivoBook S17 S712 has a sleek silver chassis at an affordable price.

Top 3 Features

AppearanceCPU PerformanceUser Experience

Although the VivoBook is not the most elegant PC in our review, its basic features will please you. It’s relatively compact, lightweight, and sturdy. The plastic chassis has matte surfaces with an aluminum color outer lid. The lid can tilt up to 140 degrees.

VivoBook’s surfaces are strong enough to withstand your keyboard pushes and flex. Then, the machine has enough ventilation grilles at the bottom of the thin bezels.

The unit is portable, compact, and lightweight, as it weighs 2300 grams and measures 21.4 mm by 256 mm by 406.9mm. The responsive touchpad is small, but it makes the keyboard large and accessible.

Since this computer is not a powerful gaming laptop, or even for a computer science laptop you may excuse it for not having spectacular performance. But, trainers and other light users will enjoy VivoBook’s basic computing capabilities.

Your Vivobook’s performance will depend on its CPU configuration. While all the CPU configurations are fine and powerful for their value, you may want to pick the specific setting that best serves your purpose. Most Asus laptops come with a wide range of configuration settings.

The VivoBook 17 processor can have a 2-Core AMD Ryzen 3 3200U, 4-Core AMD Ryzen 7 3700U, or the 4-Core AMD Ryzen 5 3500U.The 4-core AMD Ryzen 5 3500u configuration CPU 8 thread CPU with a minimum of 2.10 GHz and a maximum 3.70 GHz frequency.

The ASUS VivoBook 17 comes with 12 GB DDR4 RAM. Well, you can upgrade the RAM to up to 16GB. This laptop does not have any other slot for an increase. Yet, this RAM is enough for responsively running 20 browser tabs without any freezing.

With the ASUS laptop, you have ample storage of 1 TB. The available storage options for the VivoBok include 1TB SATA HDD, 512 GB PCIe Gen 3 x 2 M.2 SSD, or the 128 GB SATA 3.0 M.2 SSD.

While this laptop’s performance rating can handle old light games, it could easily crash when you’re running advanced games.

ASUS VivoBook 17 comes with a wide range of graphics card configurations that include the AMD Radeon RX Vega 10, AMD Radeon Vega 8, and AMD Radeon Vega 3 Graphics. And, these will not necessarily handle advanced games.

The laptop also has a frame rate of 36.44FPS at an HD resolution. The unit’s touchpad is responsive, and you can connect an external keyboard.

VivoBook offers several connectivity ports, including HDMI, USB 2.0, USB 3.2 Gen 1, and USB Type-C 3.2 ports.  The most disappointing part of the VivoBook has to be its battery life. While other personal computers in this list, such as the HP Envy 17, can last up to 9 hours, VivoBook’s 2-Cell lithium battery only lasts three hours. Also, the VivoBok ASUS doesn’t have a touchscreen. Instead, it features an LED-backlit 60Hz Anti-Glare Panel.

Pros
  • Extremely good display
  • Can easily be upgraded
  • Great CPU/Processor
Cons
  • Battery Life not as good as manufacturer states
  • Keyboard complaints – could be better quality, especially the Caps lock not having a LED notification when pressed

Verdict: If you are on a budget, this VivoBook is a good choice for a 17-inch laptop under $1000. Some models can go as low as $750. The lower the price still offers a ton of features.

The VivoBook 17 comes with GeForce MX graphics, satisfactory performance, and an all-around design. However, you have to contend with the weak construction and short battery life. Other alternatives to VivoBook 17 include the Lenovo IdeaPad 330 17, the Acer Aspire ES1, and the Dell Inspiron 17.

Overall, Envy 17 has an impeccable resolution, graphics, viewing angles, texture, sound, and 3D experience. First, the screen allows for Precise TouchScreen Support and  BlueTooth 5 combo. If you want something, you can just click it like it were a smartphone.

Although the unit has no DVD writer, it has several ports for the latest USB and HDMI technologies. Then, the unit has a Wide Vision HD camera and a Dual Array Microphone for your recording or video conferences.

The battery offers a life of between seven and nine hours.

Pros
  • Touchscreen display
  • Excellent graphics
  • Fast CPU speeds and capacity
  • Strong, long-lasting chassis build
  • Decent battery life
Cons
  • Might be seen as pricey

Verdict: The compact, lightweight, and sleek design make it an ultimate replacement for the desktop. Buyer’s Guide – How to Choose The Best 17 inch Laptop

Choosing the best laptop is not a big deal. All you need to do is keep a few things in mind – the kind of size you need, the kind of specifications, and the price range. Once you get that straight, you’ll get the exact mobile workstation you always wanted to buy. Here are a few helpful points on how to choose the best laptop for your price range.

Are Bigger laptop screens better than smaller ones?

15-inch laptops are the most popular among consumers, but 15-inch laptops may be clunky to drag around all day in terms of size and weight. If your computer isn’t portable, it’s a desktop rather than a laptop. The battery life of a 15-inch laptop is only 6 hours and 20 minutes on average. When sub-$600 laptops are taken into account, that time drops to just 5 hours and 48 minutes.

The 14-inch Asus VivoBook E403SA weighs 3.2 pounds. Lenovo’s ThinkPad 13 costs $584 and has a battery life of over nine hours. Laptops like the Dell XPS 13 become more powerful and lighter as your budget grows. A 12-, 13-, or 14-inch laptop is ideal if you’re not a heavy user or a gamer. You can carry your computer all around the house (or the world) if it is lighter and has longer battery life. Otherwise, it will have to sit near an outlet.

What is the best CPU or Processor for a 17″ Laptop?

You’ll get better performance from your games and other software if your computer has a fast processor. It’s critical to keep in mind that, unlike desktops, you cannot upgrade laptop processors. For software to run smoothly, you’ll need a processor at the very least, as shown in the table below. In general, multi-threading is a feature found on expensive processors. Chipsets that support it have a noticeable performance improvement.

Processors from previous generations may be slightly slower, but this isn’t by much. The general rule is that while faster core speeds tend to yield better performance, this is not always the case. TurboBoost is a feature found on high-end processors’ inexpensive laptops, and it allows users to increase the speed of their laptop’s core processors. It is possible to run the various OS on a single computer using virtualization. Whether you’re a gamer or not, the graphics card in your laptop is critical to its overall performance.

What kind of RAM do you need?

The DDR4 SDRAM is the most prominent kind and is used in almost all types of gaming laptops. It ensures smooth running graphics and enticing gameplay. There are other types of RAM that work pretty well too. If you’re looking to support the highest level of graphics to run the most elite of games, then we would recommend that you choose nothing less than the one we mentioned above.

Also, the amount of RAM being used depends on the number of applications running in the background. If you run multiple tasks in the background while also running a graphic-heavy game, no amount of RAM can give you a smooth experience. Keeping the background tasks list clean to get the most out of your RAM would be better.

If you have 16 GB of DDR3 SDRAM, you will be able to run almost all of the games currently available in the market at their best resolution, given that the background tasks are cleaned up, and the RAM is freed up to its maximum. If you wish to run high-end games and background apps such as discord or other streaming applications, you may want to go for additional RAM slots to increase the memory.

Does memory and storage matter?

A laptop’s actual storage space is significantly lower than what the manufacturer claims. There are two reasons for this. One, your operating system consumes space on your hard drive. For example, the most recent macOS (High Sierra) uses about 8GB of space, while the latest Windows 10 installation uses about 15GB.

The second reason is that hard drives often have less storage than they are supposed to be because consumer specs use base-10 figures multiples of 2 as in (2n) rather than complex figures that computers use. Your hard drive has almost 70.3 MB less disc space for every GB you think it has. Using a disc format, you’ll discover that “128GB” seems to be more like 99GB, “256GB” is like 218GB, and “512GB” is more like 456GB when operating system space is subtracted. We recommend going with 256GB or more for this reason, as 512GB is likely too much for most people.

How does the build and design of the laptop help?

Poor construction not only makes the machine feel flimsy and cheap on the outside, but it can also be an indication of performance issues. If a manufacturer doesn’t make an effort to improve the machine’s appearance, there’s a good chance they’re skimping elsewhere.

Despite having high-quality parts inside the laptop, it may be plagued by poor cooling, whacky input lag, an inoperable touchpad, and numerous other issues – not to mention the possibility that some cheap plastic part will break.

In general, laptops are more difficult to update and fix than desktop computers, so saving up for a good model is preferable to buying a cheap one and then regretting your decision later.

Ports and connectivity?

3.1 Gen 1 ports, according to the USB Implementers Forum, can transfer data at a rate of 10 gigabits per second, which is ten times faster than USB 2.0. USB Type-C is a small, 0.3 x 0.1-inch port that You can find on a wide range of laptops and mobile devices today. You can use a Rog Power Bank to charge a laptop via the port’s bidirectional functionality. The Thunderbolt Port can be used to charge as fast as a Type-C port.  A headphone jack, a microphone jack, S/PDIF, and sound jacks are all commonly found on laptops.

The standard 3.5mm audio jack serves two purposes: for headphone and speaker connections. Compared to HDMI 1.4’s eight audio channels, the new HDMI 2.0 standard offers 32 audio tracks. You can create Cinema-quality 3D audio in your home with the correct home theatre setup. 8K or even 10K resolutions will be supported by HDMI 2.1.

Video and gaming

What’s important when shopping for a gaming laptop: the processor or the RAM? The processor plays a bigger role. The processor doesn’t have to be the fastest in the world. When it comes to gaming, graphics processing units (GPUs) are the ones that put in the most amount of work, followed by processors, hard drives, and memory (RAM).

The RAM in itself is of secondary importance. The CPU isn’t nearly as important as the GPU. Spend less on the CPU and more on the graphics card. With a few notable exceptions, most games make heavy use of the graphics processing unit (GPU). There aren’t many games that require a lot of processing power but the ones at the top demand a greater GPU. Those at the top are also the most enjoyable ones too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do 17-inch laptops perform better?

The screen on a laptop increases in size as the machine gets more powerful. While larger screens are desirable, they come at the expense of overall laptop size and weight. In other words, you must strike a balance between display size and portability.

There is more room for a battery in larger laptops, so they have better battery life. However, not all models utilize this extra space. In addition, larger machines may use different hardware, resulting in shorter battery life. The bigger laptop computers have better speakers and a numeric pad on the keypad, which are minor factors to consider. As a result, ask yourself if you’re ready to move your 17-inch laptop around every time.

Is 17 inches too big for a laptop?

If you could find a 21-inch laptop, you would happily use it. Otherwise,  you could use HDMI to project your screen onto an 82-inch quantum dot TV in your living room.

However, it lacks portability compared to a 14-inch laptop, which is incredible in many ways. It is lightweight, has excellent battery life, super-fast performance, and so on.

Even a 15-inch laptop could do well. While it’s small, it won’t fit in your motorcycle backpack because it weighs more, is thicker, and has shorter battery life.

When using performance or ultra settings, it gets extremely hot, and the fan noise is deafening. Choosing a 17-inch monitor for your desktop is reasonable. However, it does sound a bit excessive in terms of laptops. Instead of opting for a 12- or 14- or 15-inch monitor, go for a 17-inches with slim bezels!

Which size laptop screen is best?

It’s more difficult to work comfortably on an 11.6-inch laptop because of the cramped space and small keyboard. Although the 11.6-inch model is smaller and lighter, we would recommend the 13.3-inch model.

17.3-inch laptops, the majority of which are gaming laptops, are also available, but they are bulky and heavy to carry around.

Unfortunately, these notebooks are too large and heavy for us to use on the go. Also, not a lot of rucksacks or laptop cases will accommodate laptops larger than 17.3 inches.

They’re not particularly heavy; the majority of them weigh less than 2.5 kilograms. As a result, We recommend 15.6-inch laptops over 13.3-inch models. A 14-inch laptop, on the other hand, offers the best of the two.

What is the lightest 17 inch laptop?

The lightest 17″ laptop is the Asus Vivobook S17, which weighs 5.1lbs.

What are the best 17-inch laptops under 1000?

Should i get a 15 or 17 inch laptop?

Maybe. It depends on your needs and budget. I always preferred a 17″ laptop over a 15″.

Do 17 inch laptops have better cooling?

Yes but it does depend on the design. With bigger heatsinks and more heatpipes, 17 inch laptops generally have better cooling than smaller laptops.
